SORRY, SOLD! 1931 Torpedo Model 15 Typewriter
This is a handsome and rare Model 15 TORPEDO typewriter, from 1931, with the original QWERTY keyboard. It is among the very earliest portable typewriters that the Torpedo factory manufactured. The chrome (nickel?) front and back panels was a rare variation occurring on only a small number of the earliest Model 15's. This design feature gives the typewriter a particular lightness balancing the overall black colour. It has a spectacular "presence" on a desktop or a shelf.
Acme typewriters have been the choice of discerning collectors and writers more than 1,000 times since we began selling online in 2016. They are fully guaranteed to work and fully guaranteed to arrive damage-free. Most shipments to the US arrive in 3 days--often much faster than most domestic shipments within the US. Acme typewriters are carefully selected, beautifully restored and come with a one-year mechanical warranty and lifetime customer-service. Each comes with a lead seal, attached to the body, identifying it as a fully-restored Acme typewriter. Many new dealers strive to imitate us--none succeed.
This Torpedo comes to us from a Dutch family in The Hague. Their grandfather was a member of parliament and used this as his personal typewriter for private correspondence. It remained in the family for nearly 100 years until becoming a part of the Acme Collection.
On to the typewriter itself: It is in excellent cosmetic condition and working perfectly. There are exceptionally few signs of use or wear. The body finish and chrome are as shiny and bright as new. On the right side of the carriage the chrome, behind the knob, has some light deterioration. The decals and logos are all original and in an extraordinary state of preservation. The platen is smooth and clean and, although harder than ideal, allows a lovely imprint on the paper (see typing sample). The paper feed rollers are clean and soft and the rubber feet have been replaced.
The typing action quick and has a good, solid feel. This typewriter would work very well for correspondence, poetry, short stories, etc. It works in every way as originally designed.
As mentioned the keyboard is QWERTY with accents for regional languages. The typeface is Pica (10 cpi) and this typewriter comes with its two original metal ribbon spools upon which a new, bi-colour ribbon has been mounted.
