Royal Signet Typewriter 1933

Royal Signet Typewriter 1933

€ 420,00Prijs

Here is a typewriter that is truly a collector's piece: the 1933 Royal Signet. The Signet is a fun little typewriter with a special charm all its own.

With its distinctive font, its curvy body and its extreme simplicity, the Royal Signet from this period is truly a one-of-a-kind typewriter model. These were only manufactured for about one year at the height of the Great Depression.  The idea was to make a quality, affordable typewriter.

The following information is from a wonderful website called Machines of Loving Grace:
"The Signet, was made only from Autumn, 1932 until about Sept, 1933. Rolled out with a heavy advertising campaign that included an essay contest, it was marketed as a low-cost alternative for "children, housewives, and letter writers". It is caps-only, with a san-serif italic font designed especially for this machine for maximum readability.

Despite immediate popularity, the Signet was abruptly discontinued after a single year. It seems that its low cost and popularity turned out to be its own undoing. The public was buying, but dealers weren't re-ordering. At $29.50, the Signet undercut the dealers' rental and rebuilt-machines business, both critical profit items. Royal had reasoned that the Signet's customers, once having mastered the Signet's simple features, would trade up for a more expensive model. However, in the thick of the Depression, dealers had little interest in waiting for the Signet to turn a profit "in the long run". So the Signet was discontinued."[http://machinesoflovinggrace.com/royals.htm]

The Royal Signet was manufactured without a right margin stop, a shift key, a back space key, a colour selector or a paper holder. Therefore, we suggest that you NOT buy this typewriter to type your next novel. However, it is a wonderful little machine to type out poems, lists, a diary, what-have-you.

This particular Royal Signet is in lovely condition mechanically and cosmetically. The platen roller is in fine, smooth and clean condition. The rubber feet grip the desktop well. There is almost no cosmetic signs of wear and mechanically it is in fine working condition.

The keyboard is QWERTY and the typeface is Pica in a style unique to Signets. (see example in photos). Comes with its original hard case which is in fine, solid condition. The handle is strong and intact. I find the latch one of the most charming things about this typewriter. It was repaired, probably during WW2 when materials were quite scarce, using leather and copper wire. I love it.

This Royal Signet comes with the "Acme" lead certification seal attached to the typewriter. This seal permanently identifies this typewriter as a genuine Acme-restored typewriter and provides for a 6-month warranty at no charge. (See below for details.) We guarantee safe delivery and provide careful and attentive after-purchase advice and assistance from the date of purchase to the end of eternity to ensure your full satisfaction. In terms of an investment, the Acme Seal proves that this machine was restored in 2022 by the Acme Type Machine Company. This can add value in the event that you wish to sell this typewriter in the future.

[NOTE re: 12% Discount — I like Etsy, but Etsy now has a program of advertising products of Sellers on social media. Most Sellers, like me, can NOT opt out of this program. If a person clicks these ads and then buys the item, Etsy charges the Seller (me) 12% extra on top of the usual 12-13%, thereby charging me up to 28% of the sale price. Many Sellers are very unhappy and are calling it the “Etsy Tax”. I cannot stay in business paying Etsy nearly 30% of my selling price. So, if you want to buy this typewriter, you can receive a 12% refund, after purchase, by NOT clicking on BUY, IF you have been redirected here through an advertisement somewhere. Open a new window on your browser and then open Etsy.com in that new window. By doing so you will receive a 12% refund from me after purchase. For this typewriter the price will be 370€ instead of 420€.]
