Corona Zephyr 1938
Here we have a very nice example of one of the earliest "super-portable" typewriters, the Corona Zephyr. It is in wonderful condition mechanically and cosmetically, and has been thoroughly cleaned, serviced, adjusted and aligned. It has been fitted with a new "Acme Signature" blue ribbon so you can start using it immediately. This is a wonderful, very portable typing machine weighing only around 8 lbs (4 kg).
The Zephyr was Corona's answer the the popular lightweight typewriter, the Hermes Baby. This particular Zephyr comes from the first year of production of the Zephyr model line. It has the good typing action of a larger Corona typewriter combined with great compactness. It would be a super typewriter for travel writers, backpackers and wanderers, and would be equally good on the desktop for poetry, personal letters and the like. I would not suggest this typewriter for writing your next novel.
This is a fully-working--as original--typewriter. The only thing that you have to do is sit down, put paper on the roller and start typing. This Corona comes with the "Acme" lead certification seal attached to the typewriter under the keyboard. This seal permanently identifies this typewriter as a genuine Acme-restored typewriter and provides for a 6-month warranty at no charge. (See below for details.) We guarantee safe delivery and provide careful and attentive after-purchase advice and assistance from the date of purchase to the end of eternity to ensure your full satisfaction. In terms of an investment, the Acme Seal proves that this machine was restored in 2021 by the Acme Type Machine Company. This can add value in the event that you wish to sell this typewriter in the future. And the fact that this has a new platen adds even more value.
Overall, this typewriter is in very nice condition although there are a few minimal signs of use and wear. The paint finish is good all-around and uniform with some spots of paint loss. These have been touched up to prevent further deterioration. The typing keys are big, clean and undamaged. The original Zephyr decal is bright and complete.
Mechanically, it is in excellent working condition. The platen is in excellent condition, clean and smooth, and with a hardness reading of ~94 (Ideal is: 85-95). The rubber feeder rollers are in fine condition, soft and clean. The rubber feet are in good condition and grip the desktop well. All mechanical devices and mechanisms have been checked and adjusted as necessary, and work as originally manufactured.
This typewriter has a QWERTY keyboard (standard English layout) with accent keys for European languages. The typeface is a strong Pica with 10 characters to the inch. The typewriter comes with its original metal ribbon spools and the all-important original metal spool covers in matching finish.
The case/cover is in fine condition. The original leather cover for the handle has disintegrated over time.
Based on the serial number (1Z 41957) this Hermes typewriter was manufactured in 1938, the first year of production of the Corona Zephyrs.
This fine example of a Corona Zephyr typewriter will be packed and shipped with the greatest care to preserve its condition and beauty. We have a lot of experience in shipping typewriters and have an excellent track record for proper packing and safe delivery. It will be fully insured for shipment.
Notes on the 6-month Mechanical Warranty: Should anything require repair on the typewriter the Acme Type Machine Company (an established company in the Netherlands with Chamber of Commerce registration 74166247) will repair it free of charge when shipped to our workshop.
