Torpedo Model 18 1952

Torpedo Model 18 1952

€ 560,00Prijs

This is an extraordinary TORPEDO typewriter, an early Model 18, from the post-World War 2 period (1952) with the original QWERTY keyboard. It has a cork platen in wonderful condition. If you have never typed on a cork platen you are in for a treat. They have a soft feel, yet are very durable. Cork platens have been in use since the advent of the modern typewriter yet there is little detailed information available about why or when they were employed. It is often surmised that they were used during periods of rubber shortage (e.g., wartime) however they can be found on typewriters from the 1890s through the 1950s. This typewriter was originally owned by a farming family in central Netherlands and it remained in the possession of the family until consigned to us. It comes with its original, German language, user manual.

This 1952 Torpedo Model 18 has been fully restored: cleaned, adjusted, lubricated and aligned. It is a fully-working--as original--typewriter. The only thing that you have to do is sit down, put paper on the roller and start typing. It comes with the Acme seal and a full mechanical warranty for 6 months. We provide careful and attentive after-purchase advice and assistance from the date of purchase to the end of eternity to ensure your full satisfaction.

Mechanically, this typewriter was not over-used and was maintained with great care. The cork platen is in fine condition, smooth and clean. The paper feed rollers are in excellent condition. The rubber feet are in good condition although a little harder than ideal. The chrome parts are bright and uncorroded by use or time. The platen roller knobs are strong and solid. The keytops are undamaged by fingernail scratching however, the two keys for French and German letter accents show a slight, superficial crack but are structurally sound. The space-bar has been worn in the center (see discoloured area in photos) but is absolutely solid and strong. Everything on this typewriter is original to its manufacture. All mechanical aspects are smooth and "tight" and the typing feel is just great.

If you are planning to write regularly with this typewriter, don't have any worries about the cork platen. The obvious idea when you think of cork is that it is going to fall to bits like some older wine corks. But put that thought from your mind. The cork used on platens is extremely durable and has a very smooth surface. And the typing experience is essentially the same as with a rubber platen only with an overall softer feel. However, if you wish to purchase an ordinary rubber platen in place of, or in addition to, the cork platen please contact me and we can discuss details.

As mentioned the keyboard is QWERTY with accents for regional European languages. The typeface is a lovely, strong Pica (10 cpi) and this typewriter comes with two original metal ribbon spools upon which a new, bi-colour ribbon has been mounted.

This TORPEDO typewriter comes with its original hard case. The case itself is in superb condition with only the slightest signs signs of wear and use. The hasp is in top condition and working well and handle is strong and solid. The chrome is beautiful and shiny.

Note: The photos don't have a strong picture of the left side of the typewriter. This was an oversight. Rest assured that the "hidden" side is in perfect condition just like the rest of the typewriter.

Based on the serial number (654188) this machine is from 1952.
