Brosette (Extremely rare) 1953
This BROSETTE typewriter, one of the rarest of all, mid-century, German portable typewriter brands, is in near-mint condition. Among some typewriter aficionados, the Brosette is considered one of the great "lost" masterpieces of post-war, high-quality typewriter design and engineering. (You can read all about it in the links I have listed below.) This typewriter comes from the collection of an Amsterdam art dealer who was told that it was used as a "display" typewriter for sales conventions. This may be correct as no other Brosettes with this colour combination are publicly known. That would also account for the nearly unused condition of the platen and the perfect condition of the body itself. This is also supported by the fact that this is the earliest known surviving example of a Brosette.
This typewriter has the serial number 11028, identifying it as being manufactured during the first year of production, 1953. Serial numbers began at 10,000, and that makes this particular Brosette among the first 1,000 or so Brosettes ever made. The total number of Brosettes that were manufactured is believed to be only around 36,000.
This, as you can see from the photos, is an extraordinary example of ANY typewriter, and in this case that of a rare Brosette. It is in, essentially, perfect condition both cosmetically and mechanically. There are no blemishes on the body finish, which is all original. The chrome is perfect. The platen-roller is smooth, clean and of a fine hardness for typing, measuring 95 on the hardness scale (85-95 being considered ideal). The rubber feet are in perfect condition as are the paper feed rollers. This typewriter, like all Acme typewriters, has been thoroughly cleaned, lubricated, aligned and adjusted. It is ready for typing.
Mechanically, this typewriter is also in like-new condition. As with all Acme typewriters, every aspect of the mechanical functioning of this typewriter has been inspected, cleaned and properly lubricated. All necessary adjustments and alignments have been undertaken to restore this typewriter to its original precision and functionality.
Regarding the colour: To call this a "red" typewriter is a little like calling a 1953 Chateau LaFite just a "red" wine. The colour is a rich burgundy colour (to carry the wine metaphor further). Or maybe a deep maroon colour.
This Brosette is a fine, swift typer with a very light feel to it. It has some very interesting innovations and one or two "quirks". For instance, the wire paper support activates the paper release mechanism for the platen by the user pushing the wire toward the rear of the machine. These early Brosettes have no bell (!). When the carriage reaches the indicated margin it gently stops due to the intriguing mechanisms on either side of the margin rack. In principle, though, the Brosette is a nice, smooth, highly portable typewriter. It is what many people call a "super-portable" typewriter weighing-in at around 9 lbs.
The keyboard on this Brosette is QWERTZ and the typeface is a standard Pica (10 c.p.i.)
This is a fully-working--as original--typewriter. The only thing that you have to do is sit down, put paper on the roller and start typing. It comes with the Acme seal and a full mechanical warranty for 6 months. The case is in a condition commensurate with the machine itself. In superb condition, it has only the most minor marks of use. The external chromed parts are bright, shiny and uncorroded. The interior is flawless excepting some light scratching on the rear panel. The leather handle is in fine condition and strong. The original key is present.
