Optima P1 Typewriter 1957

The Optima P1 is in beautiful condition and has been thoroughly restored. It comes with a lovely carrying case and a new ribbon, so it is ready to type--wherever you want to take it! This particular P1 belonged to a family living in the far north of the Netherlands, not far from the German border and is now ready to have a new life with a new family.

The Optima P1 is a portable typewriter whose design grew out of the famous Olympia Plana model line: a very portable design--originally produced with a bakelite body. The P1 was an attempt to capture the ever-growing market in the 1950s for truly portable typewriters. Optimas were produced in Soviet-occupied Germany using the same factories that had produced Olympia typewriters. The famous Olympia typewriter factory in Berlin survived the ravages of WW2 and after the Soviet takeover of East Germany the company was renamed "Optima". The Olympia factory was re-established in Wilhelmshaven where they continued to produce typewriters until 1992.
This Optima P1 comes with the original QWERTY keyboard which is quite rare for this model, and the typeface is Pica. 
The cosmetic condition is quite good with only a few signs of wear on the metal body. The mechanical condition is excellent. The chrome shows no signs of corrosion and the rubber parts are still pliant. The platen is clean and smooth and, although a little harder than ideal (~93 on the Shore A scale), delivers a very nice imprint on the page (see example in photo).
