Triumph Gabriele 1957
This is a rare, early model, TRIUMPH Gabriele typewriter from 1957 in khaki and cream colours. This particular model is known as the "Master Model 2". It is one of the very earliest versions of the successful "Gabriele" model line for Triumph typewriters. This typewriter has all original colours, has been fully serviced, adjusted and aligned, and is in beautiful condition cosmetically. Triumph typewriters were not heavily exported from Germany and so, finding one like this with an original QWERTY keyboard is a bit of a rarity. It comes with the original User Manual (in German), an original Triumph brush and a branded paper brush holder.
This is a very special typewriter for lovers of the swiftness and fine engineering of Triumphs. The history of Triumph typewriters is far too complicated to go into here but you can find some interesting reading in the links below. Suffice it to say that, in 1957, a German industrialist named Max Grundig bought a large interest in the factory and began producing a line of typewriters named after his grand-daughter, Gabriele. This particular Gabriele typewriter was produced in only very small numbers until it was replaced by a newly designed Gabriele typewriter and, shortly thereafter, the Gabriele-E. I particularly like this model because of its compact size and relative simplicity--of both design and mechanics. Of course, most of these early Model 2's were produced with the German QWERTZ keyboard and so, to find one with an original QWERTY keyboard, is a wonderful thing. This Triumph Gabriele is sold with a 3-month mechanical warranty and will be shipped, fully insured.
This Gabriele model typewriter is, mechanically, in excellent working condition. All buttons and levers work smoothly and correctly. On our workbench it has been properly serviced and adjusted so that it is ready for decades more fine typing. Cosmetically, it has some slight signs of age and use. There is some wear on the back left corner of the ribbon cover but this is largely out of view, and some wear on the right and left side carriage cover plates. Other than that it is in rather fine condition.
The keyboard is international QWERTY with accents for foreign languages and the typeface is an elegant Elite (11 cpi). See photo. (The double "M" imprint on the second line of the title is my own typing error, not a mechanical fault.) The platen roller is in unusually good condition and makes a fine impression of the characters on paper. It has a hardness reading of 91 on the durometer. This is as good as a new platen. Why this is the case, I don't know because it does not show signs of being replaced. It comes with a new ribbon so you can start typing immediately. The paper feed rollers are in fine condition and the rubber feet are in top condition and grip the desk well.
This typewriter is a solid typing machine with a lovely, light "touch", good, fast speed and a tight feel to all the mechanical movements. This version of the Triumph has the sought-after "Tabs" for "tabulating" columns.
Based on the serial number (739856) this machine is from 1957.
This fine TRIUMPH Gabriele comes with its original case, which is in excellent condition overall. Unusually, the original Triumph badge is in place and intact.
