Hermes Baby 1970
This is an extraordinary and beautiful, red/orange, HERMES Baby, one of the most renowned brands and models of typewriter ever made. And this particular Baby is not only a wonderfully hip/modern colour, it has a new platen and is in excellent condition, mechanically and cosmetically, and has been thoroughly cleaned, serviced, adjusted and aligned. This is the ORIGINAL colour--it has not been repainted. This typewriter has been fitted with a new two-colour ribbon so you can start using it immediately.
This is a fully-working--as original--typewriter. The only thing that you have to do is sit down, put paper on the roller and start typing. It comes with the Acme seal and a full mechanical warranty for 6 months. We guarantee safe delivery and provide careful and attentive after-purchase advice and assistance from the date of purchase to the end of eternity to ensure your full satisfaction. We have shipped safely to the outback of Australia, the Sultanate of Brunei, Japan, China, Dayton Ohio, the Isle of Wight, Ecuador and hundreds of places in between. So have no fear.
This is a typing machine that is ready to work for many good years of typing service. And with its brilliant Hermes engineering, it does that with elegance, smoothness and solidity.
Overall, this typewriter is in excellent condition. There are only the fewest signs of use and wear. The chrome is in wonderful condition with no signs of corrosion. The keys are clean and unmarked by use. The body finish is overall sparkling and glossy.
Mechanically, it is in excellent working condition. The platen, as stated, is new and has been professionally refurbished by one of Holland's oldest rubber factories. The rubber feeder rollers are in top condition, soft and clean. The rubber feet are in fine condition and grip the desktop well. All mechanical devices and mechanisms have been checked and adjusted as necessary, and work as originally manufactured.
This typewriter has a QWERTY keyboard (standard English layout) and has the "@" key. The typeface is a wonderful and compact Hermes Elite with 13 characters to the inch.
The case/cover is overall in very fine condition. The handle is clean and intact and the chrome parts show minimal corrosion. There is a crack in the left front corner which has been repaired. It is hardly noticeable and the cover is strong and can still be used normally.
(Note to Interior Designers and Film Set Decorators (where colour is critical): I have made every attempt to represent the precise hue of the typewriter but, as you know, that is quite difficult. If you would like other photos or to discuss the matter, please contact me.)
Based on the serial number (9184897) this Hermes typewriter was was manufactured in 1970.
This fine example of a Hermes Baby typewriter will be packed and shipped with the greatest care to preserve its condition and beauty. We have a lot of experience in shipping typewriters and have an excellent track record for proper packing and safe delivery. It will be fully insured for shipment.
If you are shopping for a typewriter, please note that the Platen (the black, rubber-covered roller on which the paper is wound and which receives the strike of the metal key to imprint the letter) is one of the most important elements for the enjoyable use of your typewriter and for making a correct imprint on the paper. Over time, the rubber becomes hard. This hardness results in an unpleasant, loud clatter as you type, a harder shock to your finger bones, and a faulty imprint of the letter on the paper. In the glory days of typing, platens would be replaced every few years, just like replacing the tires on your car. The typical cost for a new platen is around 125$, not including labour costs. If you are spending hundreds of dollars on a typewriter, take the time to ask the seller about the platen. Ask the seller what is the hardness measurement of the platen. It should be between 85 and 95. Most dealers simply clean off the platen and don't mention the hardness in their description. At Acme we install new platens, at no extra cost, on any typewriter that needs one in order to ensure the best typing experience and the best, decades-long operation of your typewriter.
Notes on the 6-month Mechanical Warranty: Should anything require repair on the typewriter the Acme Type Machine Company (an established company in the Netherlands with Chamber of Commerce registration 74166247) will repair it free of charge when shipped to our workshop. Due to the costs of shipping and the possibilities therein for damage during the shipping process we will work with you to make any required adjustments or repairs at home prior to taking the step to ship it to our workshop in Holland. Should it be preferable due to costs involved, we will also discuss the possibility of bringing it to a local professional typewriter repair service to make the necessary repairs.
The warranty does not cover damage due to mishandling, incorrect use or dropping the typewriter, or for ordinary typewriter maintenance such as ribbon changing, platen roller renovation, character adjustment due to extensive use etc.If you have any questions or wish to see more photos, please don't hesitate to contact us.
