This Olivetti typewriter, manufactured in 1976, is technically a Linea 98 model but was marketed as the "GIGANT" (trans: Giant) due to its exceptionally large typeface. The size of this typeface—only 5 characters-per-inch—makes it the largest font-size ever commercially sold.
No larger typeface was ever commercially manufactured. Different variants of similar, but smaller typefaces, with 6 characters-per-inch, are known including: Smith-Corona's "Speech-Riter #29", "Sight Saver #30" and "Basic Writing #67"; Remongton's "Sight Saver"; and Olympia's "Bulletin #28". But ONLY Olivetti made the gigantic 5 character-per-inch "Gigant" typeface.

Comparable to the better-known "Bulletin" type style, it produces bold, highly legible characters. This was a niche advertising/display font comprising uppercase characters only. It was intended for headings, notices, display work, and documents requiring immediate visual impact. Typewriters equipped with Gigant typeface were produced in exceptionally limited numbers and are seldom encountered today.
Introduced in the late 1960s, the Olivetti Linea 98 model-line was conceived as a heavy-duty office typewriter for continuous professional use. Designed and manufactured in Ivrea, Italy, it combined the robust engineering expected of an office machine with the refinement and visual restraint that distinguished Olivetti throughout the 20th century. The Linea 98 remains one of the company's most accomplished mechanical designs, admired for its exceptionally smooth action, quiet operation, and enduring reliability.
This particular typewriter is in very fine condition. The typing action is smooth, precise, and consistent, reflecting the mechanical refinement for which the Linea 98 is renowned. The machine presents exceptionally well, with its original finish showing only the lightest evidence of careful use.
An increasingly uncommon example of Olivetti's finest office typewriter, distinguished by one of the rarest and most striking display typefaces offered by the company.
