SORRY, SOLD! The "Hummingbird" Typewriter! 1961 Groma Kolibri with case
So much has been said and written about the Kolibri typewriter, one of the thinnest ever designed, and simply a brilliant work of mechanical design. "Kolibri" means "hummingbird" in many different languages, and the name certainly fits this extraordinarily thin and compact typewriter. It is a masterpiece of engineering.
This Kolibri was owned by a senior administrator at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. The international nature of the court's work is illustrated by the wonderful keyboard on this Kolibri. It has a QWERTY layout, so it's easy for standard English writers, but it also has keys for common French letters as well as those for $ and £, etc. It comes with its original case, user handbook and brush. The new ribbon is mounted on its two original metal ribbon spools. The typeface is Elite with 11 characters to the inch.
Manufactured in 1961, this is a wonderful example of this wonderful typewriter. Amazingly, it has no "chipping" of the paint on the ribbon cover under the return lever as almost every other Kolibri has. As far as mechanical details, this typewriter is fully working in all details. It has been fully cleaned, adjusted, aligned and lubricated. The rubber on the platen is in very fine condition with a hardness rating of ~92 (with ideal hardness being between 85 and 95). The rubber on the feet is soft and strong and holds well on the desktop.
When comparing this with other available Kolibris (there are many for sale at a variety of prices) make sure to check:
—Keyboard: Most available are QWERTZ (German) or AZERTY (FRENCH). These keyboards can be annoying to use if you are writing in English. This one is the QWERTY keyboard that you are accustomed to.
—Paint loss, usually directly under the carriage-return lever: This one has no such paint damage or loss .
—Condition of platen and rubber feet: The platen can be extremely hard as the rubber was very thin, and the rubber feet are commonly quite deteriorated (either very hard causing sliding on the desktop or, simply, falling to pieces. The platen and feet on this one are in excellent condition.
—Check that it comes with a carrying case! Many times these are offered without a case and a Kolibri without a carrying case sort of defeats the purpose of having one of the finest portables ever made.
—Zipper on the case: Often these are ripped or have separated from the case seems. The zipper on this case is in excellent condition.
The case for this Kolibri is in superb overall condition. The hasp and handle are strong and solid. The interior is in excellent condition with minimal wear marks. The exterior of this lovely faux calf-leather case is in exceptional condition with only the slightest signs of wear and use. The zipper is in excellent working condition, solid and strong.
