Corona Four Typewriter, 1925, with Historical Interest
[See next paragraph for historical provenance.] Here we have a beautiful Corona Four typewriter, one of the most popular models of typewriter in its time. This one is 100 years old this year and is in excellent working order. Not only that but the cosmetic condition is remarkably fine. It comes with the original case, oiling tube, cleaning brush and user manual. And a new ribbon so that you can begin typing immediately!
Just after the end of World War Two, the Netherlands was in conflict with its Indonesian colonies in their quest for independence. A Dutchman, "JWB" was sent to Indonesia as part of the "Royal Netherlands East Indies Army". His family was an honourable one and his cousin was a Resistance hero during the German occupation of Holland and was later executed by them for his activities. He went to Indonesia as part of the efforts to re-establish colonial control in the East Indies. Assigned to the Governor-General's office, JWB was a part of the administrative structure. He used this typewriter, which he bought in Indonesia, for his work at headquarters and for letters home to his family. Upon his return to the Netherlands he brought it with him but never really used it again.
The case tells part of the story with its bronze nameplate from the store in Indonesia where it was originally purchased. And if you look closely, you can see the faint outline of a sticker from a steamship line, which fell off decades ago. The case is in particularly fine condition overall.
Needless to say , the typewriter is now, after reconditioning in excellent working condition. The gloss finish on the body of the typewriter is shiny and bright, and the logo decals are intact and a bright gold colour. The platen is smooth and clean and has been reconditioned by us. The keyboard is English standard QWERTY and the typeface is a beautiful Pica with 10 characters to the inch.
I recommend this typewriter for writing, letters, a diary, poems, journaling etc. But I would not recommend it for writing a novel or the like. This model typewriter, although enormously popular in its day, was a little "fiddly". Perfectly fine for shorter writing projects, but get a nice Olympia or something for longer, heavier writing projects.
