1939 Erika Model M Typewriter
  • 1939 Erika Model M Typewriter

This is a very nice example of an Erika Model "M" typewriter.  It was manufactured at the beginning of 1939, just prior to the outbreak of World War II. This typewriter has a QWERTY keyboard--quite rare in the Model M. The typewriter comes with the original User Manual and its original case. It is working like new and ready to type!

Overall, the finish is in excellent condition with only light signs of wear or use. The chrome is in excellent condition. The rubber on the platen is smooth and clean and is still soft with a durometer (Shore A) reading of ~93, in fine typewriting range. The paper feed rollers are soft. This typewriter has been fully serviced, adjusted and cleaned and is ready for use.

The M stands for "Meisterklasse" and indeed the Model M is the expression of a "master-class" in typewriter design and function. The Model M is one of the most highly and successfully engineered typing machines from the mid 20th century. The tab and margin keys (for changing, setting and removing) are on the sides of the spacebar. The typing action is swift and light. There is the possibility of line-spacing from 1 to 4 lines. It is capable of "sperrschrift" which is the action of a double space between each typed letter.

About Acme (more about the typewriter below):
Acme typewriters have been the choice of discerning collectors and writers more than 1,000 times since we began selling internationally in 2016. We safely ship your typewriter from our gallery in the Netherlands and delivery time to the US averages only 3 days—this is a quicker delivery time even than most domestic shipments within the US!  Acme typewriters are covered by a 1-year warranty, and come with lifetime customer-care.

With an ACME Typewriter, you know you are getting a fully-working--as original--typewriter. The only thing that you have to do is sit down, put paper on the roller and start typing. Your typewriter comes with the "Acme" lead certification seal which permanently identifies it as a genuine Acme-restored typewriter and provides for a one-year warranty at no charge. In terms of an investment, the Acme Seal proves that this machine was restored in 2023 by the Acme Type Machine Company. This can add value in the event that you wish to sell this typewriter in the future.

Connoisseurs of typewriters speak in the highest terms about Erika typewriters. They are highly sought after for their typing action, solidity and beautifully sleek design. The Model M has been called: "the high point in the development of the Erika small typewriters" (Leonhard Dingwerth, in his "History of German Typewriters").

This machine has the possibility of Sperrschrift (extended spacing). This is a peculiarity of the German language that originates from the Frakturschrift, which did not allow for cursive script as a means of emphasizing. This way of emphasizing words or groups of words is outdated now.

The typeface is Pica (10 cpi). The keyboard is QWERTY with extra characters and accents for European languages. This typewriter comes with a new BACO ribbon (the choice of discerning collectors) so that you can start typing immediately and with pleasure.

The case is strong and very usable however it is worn in various places. Nonetheless, it will store and transport this typewriter very well.
