Remington Senior-Riter 1953

Remington Senior-Riter 1953

€560.00Price

This is an exceptionally fine example of a very early (1963) Remington Torpedo, Model 18A typewriter: the famous-but-uncommon Senior-Riter. This is the 1950s version of the iconic Model 18 typewriter from Torpedo. What makes this special is that it is a Senior-Riter. I know of no other Senior-Riters in this early body style. This typewriter has been completely conserved and restored. It has been outfitted with a renovated platen, professionally covered with new rubber by one of the oldest factories in the Netherlands. It has been fully serviced, cleaned inside and out, adjusted and aligned. It is a solid work-horse and is in excellent condition mechanically and cosmetically. The Torpedo Model 18 is well-known as one of the finest desktop typewriters available.

This is a fully-working--as original--typewriter. The only thing that you have to do is sit down, put paper on the roller and start typing. This Remington Model 18A comes with the "Acme" lead certification seal attached to the typewriter under the keyboard. This seal permanently identifies this typewriter as a genuine Acme-restored typewriter and provides for a 6-month warranty at no charge. (See below for details.) We guarantee safe delivery and provide careful and attentive after-purchase advice and assistance from the date of purchase to the end of eternity to ensure your full satisfaction. We have shipped safely to the outback of Australia, the Sultanate of Brunei, Japan, China, Dayton Ohio, the Isle of Wight, Ecuador and hundreds of places in between. So have no fear.

This is really a marvelous machine in excellent condition. As noted above, it shows very minimal use over the years. Every internal mechanism is tight and, unworn and in excellent condition. The paint finish is in perfect condition and uniform in colour (despite some reflections in the photos). The only real sign of any wear at all is some light wear under the right-hand platen knob. The chrome is in overall wonderful condition, shiny, bright and uncorroded.

Mechanically, this Remington works like new. It has been professionally serviced with all aspects of its mechanical functioning having been checked and adjusted and aligned as needed. It has been appropriately lubricated. The platen, as mentioned, has been newly renovated and will give the user a decade or two of a  very pleasurable typing experience. The paper feeder rollers are in top condition and the rubber feet are soft and grip the desktop well.

The Senior-Riter is a relatively uncommon model of the Torpedo Model 18. Many Senior-Riters, finished in military-green colour were used by the Royal Netherlands Military Forces and show up from time to time for sale. The Senior-Riter in market-oriented colours (so far they are only known in silver-gray and a blue-gray colour) seems to have only been marketed in the Netherlands. Although this assumption is open to more research. The Torpedo factory, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, was a  subsidiary of Remington for some years. While most Torpedo’s were branded Torpedo some, branded as Blue Bird or Bluebird were destined for Great Britain and some, branded as Remington, were sold through Remington sales channels. At the time it was apparently still cheaper to avoid long shipping distances, so Torpedo made some models of Remingtons for European markets.

The hard case is in beautiful and solid condition. The interior is perfect condition. The exterior shows almost no signs of age and use except for the deterioration of the exterior covering on one side (see photo).

Based on the serial number (669887) this machine is from 1953.

The typeface is a Pica (10 cpi). The keyboard is an international layout with QWERTY (English standard) and having keys for accent marks for foreign languages. This typewriter comes with a new bi-colour ribbon so that you can start typing immediately. The typing action is wonderfully fast and solid.
