Olympia SM2 1954

Olympia SM2 1954

€520.00Price

I can imagine this typewriter in use at some extremely exclusive Swiss spa or on the desk of the secretary to the Pope in Rome. Or in the home of some extremely hip, 1960s interior designer. The white colour on this beautiful machine just, to be honest, sort of blows my mind.

This is a 1954, OLYMPIA SM2 typewriter, in a highly unusual white colour. It is in very fine condition in every way. It has been fully serviced, aligned and adjusted. We have outfitted this SM2 with a newly renovated platen roller so the typing is clean and clear and soft. It has a new two-colour ribbon so you can start typing immediately.

The white colour is all original. And note that this is NOT an SM5 or a Monica model Olympia typewriter. Those typewriters were almost exclusively offered in a "white" colour. Actually, off-white. But an SM2 in a true white colour is as rare as they come.

This typewriter is sold complete with a 3-month mechanical guarantee, lifetime service advice and free shipping including insurance.

This is a rare find and a rare chance. Please note: Any appearance that the body finish has any disparities in colour is only a tribute to my poor photography skills rather than reality. The body colour is uniform and unblemished by sun. This typewriter has been well cared-for during its lifetime. There are a very few and tiny scratches and signs of use but, overall, it is in exceptionally fine condition. There are a few light scratches on the ribbon cover that we have touched up. We have emphasized them in the last photo with arrows to indicate them. In real life, they are hardly noticeable.

Mechanically, this typewriter is working perfectly. It has been carefully restored, adjusted and aligned. The only flaw is that the 3/4-1/4 key does not advance the carriage. It works the same as the accent keys. These are called "dead keys". Why this particular key is like that, I just don't know. I have a feeling that the keyboard was professionally modified  in the distant past. The key on the far right of the upper row of keys is unusual: it is a line for underlining AND a line for "over-lining". I have never seen one before. When I removed the 3/4 key for inspection, it was clear that it was meant--for whatever reason--to work this way. Anyway, don't buy this typewriter if you will be using the 3/4 key regularly.

Based on the serial number (487124) this machine was manufactured in 1954.

The keyboard is international QWERTY with accents for foreign languages. The typeface is Olympia's "Pica #97" (10 c.p.i.).

Regarding the rubber: Platen Roller is new. The Paper Feeder Rollers are clean and soft. The Feet are clean and soft.
Regarding the chrome: Perfect. No corrosion.
Regarding the Body condition: Excellent overall. There are a few tiny spots of paint loss, mostly on the back side (out of view). These have been touched up and are mostly invisible. As mentioned, there are a few retouched  scratches on the ribbon cover.

Unfortunately, this typewriter has been orphaned from its original hard case.

The SM series of typewriters from the Olympia factories in Germany are considered by many to be the "gold-standard" of what a modern desktop typewriter should be.

This typewriter really proves the notion that Olympia typewriters are some of the finest typing machines ever made. The typing action is wonderfully smooth and solid, swift and efficient. This is a typewriter to use and treasure, something to pass along to the next generation.
