SORRY, SOLD! 1956 All-Black Erika Model 11 Typewriter
  • SORRY, SOLD! 1956 All-Black Erika Model 11 Typewriter

    €500.00Price

This typewriter is an extraordinary ERIKA Model 11 typewriter in wonderful condition, cosmetically and mechanically, from 1956. It comes complete with original case also in fine condition. This typewriter has NOT been repainted; it is all original. AND it has a QWERTY keyboard for ease of typing. A new ribbon is installed so you can start typing immediately.

The Model 11 is highly regarded by collectors and typists for its design, portability and its usability. It is handsome, compact and very portable. It is quite an uncommon typewriter, as only around 50,000 were manufactured. I don't know why they abandoned this model because it is a simply wonderful portable typewriter. What I suspect is that the "portable market" was saturated (by Hermes and Princess among a few others) when it was introduced by Erika and they just never were able to capture a profitable share of the market for this size machine.

The Model 11 is the distillation of the best parts of the famous and more common Erika Models 10 and 12 into a very portable typing machine. It combines all the fine mechanics of these other models and maintains the beautiful soft, solid, fast feel of them. This is a real writer's typewriter with portability. The design is rather "utilitarian" but somehow the beautiful proportions and overall design raises is to a higher aesthetic level.

This typewriter is in perfect working condition. The rubber on the platen is excellent condition, clean, smooth and soft, with a ~92 hardness measurement (ideal being 85-95). All the other rubber is clean and soft. The cosmetic condition is excellent, but it has some very small signs of wear and use here and there. But, as you can see from the photos, it is quite minimal.

For some discussion on this very well-respected model of the Erika typewriter, see:

It has a QWERTY keyboard with keys for European languages and the typing action is superb: light and fast but with solid and quick carriage movement (for fast typewriting). The typeface is standard Pica, with 10 characters to the inch.
