Blue Bird Model 18B 1959
This is a wonderful example of a mid-20th century Blue Bird Model 18b typewriter with QWERTY keyboard. This is the famous "Model 18B" marketed as the Remington (as the Senior-Riter) and Torpedo, as well as Blue Bird. It is absolutely beautiful and works perfectly! The colour of the finish is all original; this typewriter has not been repainted. This Blue Bird typewriter is sold with a 3-month mechanical guarantee and will be shipped without extra charge, fully insured to you.
It is not easy to find a Model 18, in such good condition and with the original QWERTY keyboard. Most were manufactured with the German keyboard. The Blue Bird Model 18, which is precisely the same typewriter as the Torpedo Model 18 (other than the marketing name) was primarily sold in the United Kingdom. This model typewriter is a solid work-horse and this particular example is in top original condition mechanically and cosmetically. The Model 18B, of course, has the tabulator feature. This typewriter has been fully serviced, adjusted and cleaned and is ready for action. And it is a "thing of beauty". There are only very small signs of wear and use and these you can see in the photos.
These Model 18's are great typers with a short, swift "touch" and a tight keyboard. It is a good typewriter for regular writing, daily work or the occasional personal or business correspondence.
Cosmetically, this Blue Bird is in really top condition. The finish colour is uniform and largely unblemished except for a very small spot under the spacebar. There is some very light wear on the lower back panel and perhaps a spot or two elsewhere on the typewriter, but nothing larger than the head of a pin. The chrome is all in fine condition, however the two side panels have some very minor signs of age.
Mechanically, this Model 18B is working as originally. All the mechanical aspects have been checked and properly adjusted and aligned. The platen is soft, clean and smooth. The rubber on the platen is still in excellent typing condition with a durometer reading of 91--very close to a new platen. It has a wonderfully tight, smooth and soft typing action.
The paper feeder rollers are in excellent condition and grip the paper well. The rubber feet are a little harder than ideal but they, too, still grip well on a desktop.Based on the serial number (1084867) this machine is from 1959.
Typeface/Font is Pica (10 cpi). The keyboard is an original English international QWERTY and has the coveted "@" symbol. This typewriter comes with a new two-colour ribbon so that you can start typing immediately and with pleasure.
This Model 18 comes with the original hard case which, sadly, has nearly given its life to protect the treasured typewriter within. It remains relatively solid and protective, and one can use the case effectively for transport or storage, but one can see from the photos that the top has become partially separated from the sides and the outer metal parts have succumbed to corrosion. Nonetheless, the handle is strong and the hasp is in good working order.
