SOLD! 1959 Hermes Baby with Historical Importance
  • SOLD! 1959 Hermes Baby with Historical Importance

    €850.00Price

This is the type of "barn find" for which historians and collectors live! A pristine Hermes Baby with all original paperwork including sales receipt from its original purchase from a dealer in Leopoldville, Congo (West Africa). It has been in my personal collection for some time but it is now time to part with it.

This typewriter came from the estate of a Belgian aristocrat who accompanied King Baudouin on his last visit to Congo in 1959 and was appointed a senior member of the delegation to facilitate the transition to becoming an independent country in 1960. (The family has requested that I preserve their anonymity but the name is on the receipt. I will discuss this with the purchaser.)

Note that this Hermes Baby was purchased with the optional "DeLuxe" case. The purchase price, 3,950 Belgian Francs, is approximately equal to 1,500€ in current day purchasing power. This Hermes comes with the original receipt, original factory guarantee, fingering guide, User Manual, key for the case and an interesting eraser and erasing shield. All of these items are original to the typewriter.

The case itself is nearly without blemish. The only one to note is a faint marking on the inner flap where ink from the type-slugs has lightly stained the plastic. The silk lining, as the rest of the interior, is in perfect condition. The rubber on the feet has hardened with age but I have retained the original feet for historical preservation. (These can be replaced upon request.)

Hermes, of course, is one of the most renowned brands and models of typewriter ever made, and this is an exceedingly fine example of the "Baby" model from 1959. This typewriter is in superb condition, mechanically and cosmetically. The sub-saharan dust has been cleaned from it and it has been fully serviced and a new platen has been installed. It is a typing machine that is ready to work for another 60 years of typing service or for a museum of African history.

Like all of our typewriters this is a fully-working typewriter. It comes with the "Acme" lead certification seal attached to the typewriter which permanently identifies it as a genuine Acme-restored typewriter and provides for a one year warranty. We guarantee safe delivery and provide careful and attentive after-purchase advice and assistance from the date of purchase to the end of eternity to ensure your full satisfaction. In terms of an investment, the Acme Seal proves that this machine was restored by the Acme Type Machine Company. This can add value in the event that you wish to sell this typewriter in the future.

Mechanically, it is in perfect working condition. The platen-roller has been replaced with a new one. The paper feeder rollers are clean and soft. All mechanisms have been tested and adjusted. It comes with two metal ribbon spools, original to the typewriter.  Everything on this typewriter is original to its manufacture and purchase except the new platen and the new ribbon.

The keyboard is an AZERTY keyboard  and has the elegant typeface of Hermes Elite (11 cpi). It comes with a new, Acme Signature Blue ribbon.
