Torpedo Model 30 1962
This is a very fine and interesting example of a two-tone Torpedo, Model 30 typewriter. It is a lovely little typing machine and is in wonderful condition mechanically and cosmetically. This Model 30 has been fully refurbished: serviced, cleaned, adjusted and aligned and has been outfitted with a new ribbon. It comes with original case, brush and user manual. The colours on this typewriters are ORIGINAL; this typewriter has not been overpainted.
The Model 30 is a rather uncommon typewriter. It is hard to determine exactly how many were manufactured but I feel certain that there are very few existing in this beautiful condition anymore. This is a fully-working--as original--typewriter. The only thing that you have to do is sit down, put paper on the roller and start typing. This Torpedo comes with the "Acme" lead certification seal attached to the typewriter under the keyboard. This seal permanently identifies this typewriter as a genuine Acme-restored typewriter and provides for a 6-month warranty at no charge. (See below for details.) We guarantee safe delivery and provide careful and attentive after-purchase advice and assistance from the date of purchase to the end of eternity to ensure your full satisfaction.
The design of this typewriter is a movement into the modern, bridging the period between mid-century modern in the 50's and the "Spcae Age" design of the 60's. The designer, probably Andreas Salzberger, who is credited with designing the Torpedoi Model 18, was trying something new, moving away from the "institutional" design of earlier models.
Looking at the bottom of the typewriter (see photo) we can see that there was a shift here towards using what I believe is plated-steel for a larger proportion of the mechanical aspects of the machine than previously. From a mechanical perspective this is a lovely machine. This is a swift and tight typer and, although being a smaller portable, has the feel of a larger machine.
The body finish, overall, is in excellent condition with only a couple of scratches at the back left corner of the ribbon cover. The chrome is in excellent condition. The platen roller is clean and smooth and has a wonderful hardness measurement of 92 (Ideal considered 85-95). The Paper Feed Rollers and the rubber feet are still in fine condition and soft. The chrome logos are all in top condition.
Mechanically, this typewriter is in excellent typing condition. The typing action is wonderfully fast and crisp. All mechanical aspects of this typewriter have been checked, inspected and adjusted as needed.
Based on the serial number (1515496) this machine is from 1962. The typeface is a beautiful and interesting Congress Pica (10 cpi). The keyboard is standard QWERTY with accents for foreign languages. You can see the quality and crispness of the imprint on the typing sample in the photos.
The case is in excellent condition with few signs of usage.
This Torpedo 30 has been conserved to our highest standards. It has been fully serviced, adjusted and aligned, cleaned inside and out, and is ready for some serious typing.
