Olympia Splendid 99 1964

€820.00Price

We are pleased to offer this mint condition OLYMPIA Splendid 99 typewriter in fabulous red and cream with leatherette slip-cover case. It is in pristine condition in every way and has been professionally serviced, aligned and adjusted. This is an absolutely extraordinary typewriter with a red body and cream keys. It has a stunning presence on your desk or in your office. The typewriter comes from Curaçao where it was purchased originally, in the early 1960s, by a Dutch family with long historical ties to the island-nation. It comes with the two original metal ribbon spools.

This is a fully-working--as original--typewriter. The only thing that you have to do is sit down, put paper on the roller and start typing. It comes with the Acme seal and a full mechanical warranty for 6 months. We guarantee safe delivery and provide careful and attentive after-purchase advice and assistance from the date of purchase to the end of eternity to ensure your full satisfaction. We have shipped safely to the outback of Australia, the Sultanate of Brunei, Japan, China, Dayton Ohio, the Isle of Wight, Ecuador and hundreds of places in between. So have no fear.

The Splendid 99 is one of the great super-portable typewriters. Weighing only around 10 lbs, it has been positively compared to the Hermes Rocket and Baby and some typewriter enthusiasts prefer the Splendid 99 due to the longer carriage-return lever and the more solid "action". Because this is an Olympia, it was manufactured with precision and care and is a superb writing machine.

The keyboard is English standard QWERTY, and the typeface is Olympia's Elite (11 c.p.i.). It has the "@" key, $ sign, among other symbols. It comes with a modern copy of the User Manual.

Cosmetically, this typewriter is without any blemishes at all. It is in like-new condition. It has not been repainted. The red colour finish is original to the typewriter. The chrome is bright, shiny and is unmarred by corrosion or scratching. Likewise the typing keys are in like-new condition.

Mechanically, this typewriter is also in Like-new condition. The platen-roller has hardly been typed upon, is smooth and clean, and has an ideal hardness rating of 89 (85 to 95 is the ideal range). (See discussion of platens below.) Every aspect of the mechanical functioning of this typewriter has been inspected, cleaned and properly lubricated. All necessary adjustments and alignments have been undertaken to restore this typewriter to its original precision and functionality.

Comes with the original, leatherette case which is in excellent condition. The external brass parts are uncorroded and shiny. The flaps have a couple of small tears on the edges and in the interior a couple of small tears to the inner lining have been carefully repaired. The handle and hasp are strong and fully functional.

Based on the serial number (95-360201) this machine was manufactured around 1964.

If you are shopping for a typewriter, please note that the Platen (the black, rubber-covered roller on which the paper is wound and which receives the strike of the metal key to imprint the letter) is one of the most important elements for the enjoyable use of your typewriter and for making a correct imprint on the paper. Over time, the rubber becomes hard. This hardness results in an unpleasant, loud clatter as you type, a harder shock to your finger bones, and a faulty imprint of the letter on the paper. In the glory days of typing, platens would be replaced every few years, just like replacing the tires on your car. The typical cost for a new platen is around 125$, not including labour costs. If you are spending hundreds of dollars on a typewriter, take the time to ask the seller about the platen. Ask the seller what is the hardness measurement of the platen. It should be between 85 and 95. Most dealers simply clean off the platen and don't mention the hardness in their description. At Acme we install new platens, at no extra cost, on any typewriter that needs one in order to ensure the best typing experience and the best, decades-long operation of your typewriter.

Notes on the 6-month Mechanical Warranty: Should anything require repair on the typewriter the Acme Type Machine Company (an established company in the Netherlands with Chamber of Commerce registration 74166247) will repair it free of charge when shipped to our workshop. Due to the costs of shipping and the possibilities therein for damage during the shipping process we will work with you to make any required adjustments or repairs at home prior to taking the step to ship it to our workshop in Holland. Should it be preferable due to costs involved, we will also discuss the possibility of bringing it to a local professional typewriter repair service to make the necessary repairs.
The warranty does not cover damage due to mishandling, incorrect use or dropping the typewriter, or for ordinary typewriter maintenance such as ribbon changing, platen roller renovation, character adjustment due to extensive use etc.
