Erika Model M Typewriter with scientific notation keys
ERIKA MODEL M (MEISTERKLASSE) TYPEWRITER
Germany, 1939The Erika Model M represents the highest development of Erika’s typewriter line before the Second World War. Designated Meisterklasse, the Model M is widely regarded as the technical and ergonomic culmination of the series and is among the most respected German portable typewriters of the period.
This example is distinguished by its factory-original, multicoloured keytops—a rare survival and seldom encountered on Model M machines. The effect is both functional and visually distinctive, lending the machine an unusual clarity and freshness. It is accompanied by its original hard carrying case, original cleaning brushes, and the original user manual.
The machine has been professionally restored and operates to original factory specifications. The typing action is light, fast, and precise. The machine supports Sperrschrift (letter-spacing emphasis), a period feature associated with German typographic convention. Margin and tabulator controls are positioned adjacent to the spacebar, a hallmark of the Model M’s unique engineering.
This example is equipped with additional Greek-symbol keys—including alpha, beta, theta, pi, omicron, and epsilon—indicating intended use for technical or scientific writing. The original owner was a German engineer, though no further documentation of him or his work survives.
Cosmetically, the machine is in excellent condition, showing only minimal, age-appropriate wear. Chrome surfaces are clean and intact. The platen rubber is smooth and has been reconditioned, measuring approximately 91 Shore A, an ideal hardness for clear and controlled impressions. New rubber feet have been fitted to ensure stable desk placement.
The keyboard is original QWERTZ (German standard) and may be converted to QWERTY by prior arrangement. The typeface is Erika Pica. A new ribbon is installed.
The case is in particularly fine condition. The front corners of the baseplate (a known weakpoint on Erika cases) have been repaired by the previous owner.
Discreetly marked with the Acme restoration seal, identifying professional restoration completed in our workshop in 2026.
This Erika Model M is a rare and historically significant example, preserved with unusual completeness and integrity. It will be carefully packed, fully insured, and shipped worldwide with the attention such a machine warrants.
