Manufactured during a period when Japanese typewriter makers were establishing an international reputation for precision engineering, the Gyonne Elgin Collegiate reflects the high quality that emerged from Japan's post-war industrial expansion. Compact in form, this model is distinguished by an exceptionally soft and responsive typing action, combining lightness of touch with a beautifully designed outer body. The case is in exceptionally fine condition.
 
Marketed under the comparatively uncommon Gyonne brnad-name, the Elgin Collegiate was designed as a practical portable typewriter. Its restrained styling and precise mechanical construction exemplify the growing confidence of Japanese manufacturers during the late 1950s and early 1960s, a period now increasingly appreciated by collectors of twentieth-century industrial design.
 
The present example, manufactured in 1960, is finished in a well-preserved eggshell blue enamel that complements the model's clean, understated design. It remains in beautiful condition throughout, with a remarkably well-preserved finish and a typing action that is smooth and consistent. Fitted with an Elite typeface, it produces a clear, finely proportioned printed line ideally suited to everyday correspondence and extended writing.
 
This typewriter has been restored by Acme Type Machine Company to its original mechanical standard. The mechanism has been cleaned, adjusted, and calibrated, and a new ribbon has been installed. It bears the permanent Acme Seal, identifying restoration within our workshop and providing enduring provenance.
