Hebrew Typewriter 1976 Olympia SM8 in as-new condition
OLYMPIA SM8 · 1976 · HEBREW KEYBOARD
Hebrew-language typewriters occupy a distinct position within the world of mechanical writing machines. Produced in very small numbers, hey are seldom encountered in this pristine condition. This example includes an unusual feature: a rare “dot matrix” key intended for secure cheque writing. The typeface is Pica (10 characters per inch).
Introduced during the postwar period in West Germany, the Olympia SM model series came to define a particular standard of mechanical refinement in portable typewriter design. The SM8 model combined durability, precision, and an unusually smooth typing action, earning an enduring reputation among serious writers.
By the mid-1970s, the SM8 had reached a mature and highly resolved form. Its design was restrained and functional, with an emphasis on mechanical reliability and smoothness of operation. The carriage movement is light and controlled, the touch responsive and even, and the overall construction notably solid for a portable machine of its class.
The present example, manufactured in 1976, is configured with a factory Hebrew keyboard. Hebrew-language Olympia machines were produced in very limited numbers and this one is preserved in near-new condition. This machine retains the balanced action and understated industrial character for which the SM series is regarded.
This typewriter has been restored by Acme Type Machine Company in 2026 to its original mechanical standard. It bears the permanent Acme Seal and has been fitted with a new ribbon, ready for immediate use. This Olympia typewriter comes with its original carrying case.
