Imperial Good Companion Typewriter (1942) with case and cork platen

€520.00Price

This is a really lovely example of a Good Companion typewriter from Great Britain's famed Imperial Typewriter Company. This one, was made in 1942 or 1943, in the middle of the Second World War. It is unusual in that it has a cork platen (in beautiful condition). The typewriter has been fully reconditioned and adjusted and is ready to type again for another 80 years. It comes with a beautiful wooden case made by an experienced cabinet-maker. Overall, this is a charming and interesting typewriter

This typewriter came to us from a Dutch family that spent the war years in England associated with the Dutch government-in-exile which was established there when Queen Wilhelmina was forced to flee the Netherlands when the Germans invaded. The family returned to Holland after the war, carried this typewriter with them, and kept it in the family until very recently.

The astute observer will note that there is no left-side platen knob. That is how this model typewriter was designed. It is not missing! Mechanically the typewriter is working perfectly and cosmetically. . .well, you can see that condition from the photos. The decals and logos are in excellent condition overall and there are very few signs of wear or use. There is some darkening of some of the letters underneath the keytops. This is not dirt, this is darkening from age. The platen is clean and smooth and the other rubber parts are in fine, soft condition. It comes with the original metal ribbon spools and a new ribbon so you can start typing immediately. The typeface is Pica with 10 characters to the inch and has the original QWERTY keyboard (English standard).

The case is in very good condition: solid but with some signs of age and use. It is possible that, due to war-time shortages, it was not possible to buy a case with this particular typewriter. The case was certainly made by an experienced woodworker, probably a cabinet-maker. It has a wooden plate, with rubber feet, on which the typewriter can be attached (and can be un-attached) so that it is easily lifted out of the case.
