Olympia Progress Typewriter with Case 1949, Germany
This is an exceptionally well-preserved 1949 Olympia Progress typewriter, complete with its original carrying case and showing essentially no signs of wear or use. The original finish, decals, keyboard, brightwork and mechanical components remain remarkably fresh, giving the machine the appearance of having been carefully stored for decades rather than regularly used. The Progress model occupies an important place in Olympia history. Introduced in the early 1930s as an improved version of Olympia’s first portable, it established the engineering lineage that led to the SM model-line of typewriters. The SM model-line is one of the most important, celebrated and influential of the Olympia typewriters. The Progress combined compact proportions with unusually substantial construction and a controlled, precise typing action that still feels remarkably smooth and steady. This 1949 example is particularly appealing because it dates from the early postwar period, just before Olympia’s portable design evolved into the SM generation that would establish the company’s international reputation. Its Pica typeface gives a clear, classic page impression, while the machine itself retains the firm, smooth and deliberate action for which the Progress is known.
