Smith Corona Clipper Typewriter Pristine 1946
Acme Studios is known for finding the finest examples of European typewriters from the Golden Age of typewriter manufacturing—and this Clipper is outstanding proof of that. And this, our first new offering for 2024 may blow the rest of the year out of the water—but, no matter!
This is an extraordinarily beautiful and evocative typewriter—and in a nearly unbelievable state of preservation! This iconic Smith Corona Clipper typewriter dates from 1946 and looks and feels as if it has just arrived from the factory. The typing action is soft and sure, and the like-new platen (with an ideal firmness measurement of ~89 on the Shore A scale) makes typing quieter and more enjoyable. Look closely at the photos and you will see the absolutely marvelous condition of this exceptional machine. (More photos and with better resolution can be found at our website: "acmetypemachines dot com".) The Clipper logo is in perfect, original condition--which is rare indeed!
This Clipper has the later, preferred, full-platen paper bail (the bar that holds the paper down), which is preferred to the "clips" on other versions. It comes with its original User Manual and the original case with key and is "ready-to-type" with a new ribbon on the original, factory-installed metal ribbon spools. The keyboard is QWERTY and the typeface is a fine Pica (10 cpi).
The pleasure of typing on this elegant machine is hard to describe in words. The keys just caress your fingertips and encourage the typing of the next word. The carriage movement feels like it is driven by the fine-tuned workings of a Swiss watch. The "Floating Shift" mechanism is a basket-shift and is light as a feather. The levers on the carriage are ergonomically fit to the hand and aesthetically beautiful. The platen roller knobs are large and fit the hand like a lover's touch.
The "Clipper" logo is one of the most iconic among typewriter symbols and powerfully evokes the feel of the era in which this typewriter was manufactured. The airplane in the logo is the Boeing 314 "Clipper" flying boat, manufactured between 1938 and 1941, that quickly became a powerful symbol for luxurious, international travel.
