Pristine 1969 Hermes 3000 Typewriter with New Platen!

€1,100.00Price

I purchased this incredible Hermes 3000 some years ago, on a buying trip to the UK, from the family of an architect who had bought it new. The key to the case was lost and so I had to buy it based only on the case. I stuck it in the corner of my warehouse and last week "picked the lock" and was amazed when I opened the cover to find a pristine machine with the original user manual and brushes! If you are looking for an exceptionally fine Hermes 3000, this is the one for you!

This is an uncommon Hermes colour: "champagne-blue" and white, with an unusual typeface, and comes with the original equipment. We have replaced the platen because it was getting hard and we replaced the carriage knobs with new ones because there was a slight crack in one of the old ones (common to this era Hermes typewriters). There are only a couple of tiny scratches on the edge of the base, but beyond that it is cosmetically perfect.

Mechanically, it is in pristine—and perfectly working—condition. All the rubber components are in perfect condition and soft. The feet are in like-new condition, soft and still grip the desktop well. And, of course, we have thoroughly cleaned it, lubricated it, and made some tiny adjustments to make it an absolute joy to type with!

The typeface is unusual in that it is what some call "Elite Pica". (Crazy, huh?) (Marked "S7" on the type-slugs, for aficionados.) There are 13 characters to the inch. Most Pica's are 10 to the inch and Elite's generally range from 11 to 11.5. It has the "condensed" look of the famous Hermes Director-Elite typeface. Whatever, you want to call it, it is uncommonly handsome looking.

The keyboard is QWERTY and the typewriter has been fitted with a new ribbon so you can start typing immediately. This is a typing machine that is ready to work for many good years of typing service. And with its brilliant Hermes engineering, it does that with elegance, smoothness and solidity.

The cover is in equally fine condition with only a couple of light spots of corrosion evident on the chrome either side of the handle.

When "comparison shopping" other Hermes 3000's, please check the following:
—paint loss, especially around edge of the base plate and back corners of the ribbon cover.
—condition of knobs. 80-90% are cracked and unstable even though the photos may bot show it. So be sure to ask the dealer before buying.
—Hermes of this era are prone to cracks, too, in the side panels on either side of the carriage. It is a good idea to ask the dealer about that, too.
—The platens on Hermes from this era are quite often as hard as stone. They can work alright in terms of the imprint but a platen with proper hardness (softness) is less percussive, quieter while typing, protects the typing mechanism and makes a more beautiful and perfect imprint.
—The base plate often gets dents and this can interfere with the mechanical operations inside.
—And be certain that the "Shift mechanism" is smooth. Sometimes, there can be a maladjusted mechanism that makes shifting difficult. It should be effortlessly smooth and soft.
—Check that the keyboard is not QWERTZ (German) or AZERTY (French). These keyboards will be difficult to become accustomed to for English writers.

Needless, perhaps, to say, but you won't find any of these issues on this typewriter!
