Remington Portable (1927) with Rare Green Typing Keys!
REMINGTON PORTABLE MODEL 2 — 1927 Original black gloss finish with rare green keys Pica typeface/font New Platen
A Remington Portable Model 2 manufactured in the United States in May 1927, in its original black gloss finish and with original green keys. We know of no other Remington portable with factory-fitted green keys. The one other green-keyed example we have found, in a private collection, was given its keys in a later rebuild. This machine has a new platen, and comes with its original case, in fine, solid condition, with a new leather handle.
Remington first showed its portable at the New York Business Show in October 1920. It was the first truly portable typewriter with a four-row keyboard, and it had that field to itself until 1926. The Model 2 followed in February 1925 and remained in production until the end of 1928; the number was used only within the company, and the machine was sold simply as the Remington Portable. As on the first model, a lever at the right-hand side raises the typebars to their printing position, and they are lowered again before the machine goes into its case. This machine has the Pica typeface with 10 characters to the inch.
The black gloss finish is original. There are spots of wear at the corners, which have been carefully retouched. The typing keys are green and the keyboard is QWERTY. The original platen has been fitted with new rubber. The typewriter comes with its original case, which is in fine, solid condition and has been fitted with a new leather handle.
This typewriter has been restored by Acme Type Machine Company. The mechanism has been carefully cleaned, adjusted and calibrated; the original keyboard is unaltered. It bears the permanent Acme Seal, attached discreetly on the mechanism, identifying restoration within our workshop and providing enduring provenance.
