SORRY, SOLD! "Unused" 1959 Olympia SM3 Typewriter
Do not buy this typewriter if you are looking for a “restored” Olympia SM3! There are many dealers who offer SM3’s for only a few hundred dollars. Spend your money there. It is in nearly unused condition. This typewriter has not been restored; but it has been inspected, tested, and properly prepared for decades of writing to come.
However, if you are interested in an, effectively, new and unused SM3, please read further.
At Acme, we relentlessly search the markets of Europe to find the most extraordinarily fine typewriters. This typewriter counts as one of the gems of our careful work. We are pleased to offer this mint condition OLYMPIA SM3 typewriter manufactured in 1959.
Why do we say: unused? The “giveaway” is this (and this is a “Pro-Tip” that you can take with you): the platen still has tiny, circumferential ridges along its full length. During this period of manufacturing, Olympias had, when new, platens with these delicate ridges, or rings. Look carefully at the close-up of the platen in the photos and you will see what I mean. These rings were quickly worn off with use. This platen has the rings along the full length and the platen is the original one. This, a professional can determine by the look and feel of the screws attaching the platen.
Another giveaway is the texture of the external paint finish. Olympias have a very durable external finish. However the tops of the “waves” in the texture are originally quite sharp and, in fact, very delicate. They, like the rings on the platen, are quickly worn off, leaving the beautiful texture intact but reducing the sharpness of the contrast that can be seen, and felt. Look at the closeups (and the distance shots!) and you can see the depth and intact nature of the textured finish.
Other details to note are, of course, the cleanliness of the typewriter but also things like: the leather pads under the ribbon spools, the condition of the lines under the plastic “card holders”, the condition of the keytops, the sound (yes, good restorers listen to their typewriters), etc., etc.
